Veryle F. Anderson, 97, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at her home in Eldorado, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, with burial in the Alpha Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Hugdahl officiated. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements.

The second of six children, Veryle Frances (Nims) Anderson was born March 11, 1913, near Lawler to Frank and Mabel Nims.

She grew up on farms in Chickasaw and Fayette counties, attended rural grade schools, and graduated from Clermont High School in 1931.

Veryle married Edwin "Ted" Anderson, and they raised seven children while farming near West Union, Fredericksburg and Randalia. They were later divorced.

Veryle owned and operated Andy's Cafe in Decorah for three years with help from her children and longtime companion Al Gage. She later worked at Cobies Office Supply as office manager and bookkeeper.

She owned a home in Decorah before moving to Eldorado with Al.

A hardworking farm wife, Veryle planted huge gardens and canned and froze their bounty for her family. Dinners at "Granny's" became a weekly event, with her famous pies, homemade bread, pecan rolls and specialty dishes in demand.

A prolific seamstress, she sewed clothing and quilts for family and others; crocheted afghans, baby sweaters, doilies and countless slippers; and wove rugs on her loom.

Veryle played violin, piano, organ, mandolin, zither and snare drums at school and home, passing on her love of music to her children and grandchildren.

A avid lifelong angler, she spent the winters fishing the Gulf waters off Port Aransas, Texas, with Al, and the summers fishing in Iowa lakes and streams near her home and in Minnesota lakes near the Boundary Waters at her son Jim's cabin.

Veryle belonged to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, where she participated in Circle Bible study, mission quilting, bake sales, dinners and other church events.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister; four brothers; her son, Merle; and her companion, Al.

Veryle is survived by her children, Marlene (Bill) Rosing, Joyce (Garry) Jacobson, Jerry (Linda) Anderson, Marilyn Anderson (Marney Davidson), Jan Anderson, Jim (Linda) Anderson and Julie Kane (Dean Stoddard); 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In her own unique way, Veryle touched the lives of all she met. She will be missed dearly and will remain in the hearts of each and every one.

"We wish to thank the nurses and staff at Palmer Heart of Iowa Hospice for their kind and caring help and support."
