Alice Rosina Howard, 95, of Elgin, Iowa, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union, Iowa, following a brief illness.

Alice was born on January 1, 1915, on the family farm in rural Clayton County, Iowa, to Martin and Anna (Meyer) Hanson. She graduated from Elgin High School and attended Upper Iowa University to get her Normal Training certificate for teaching.

Alice was united in marriage to Archie Howard on March 3, 1934, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Her husband, Archie, died on March 17, 1982. Four children were born to this union.

Early in her life, Alice taught at several Clayton and Fayette County country schools; later in her life after obtaining more education she substitute taught in the Elgin Public School. Many times over the years, Alice met one on one with children as mentor and tutor.

Alice enjoyed writing, fishing, gardening and the outdoors. She actively followed elections and never missed a vote. She traveled to Switzerland to visit her ancestral home; a highlight experience. She baked delicious bread and pies and even participated in the Pillsbury Bakeoff. She was a member of the Friends of Elgin Public Library, Swiss Club, Social Hour Club - a rural neighborhood club, Retired Teachers Association, and Elgin Historical Society. One summer she attended the University of Iowa Summer Writer's School. Alice was a long-time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, UMW and WSCS. Her home was always open for her family and friends. We will miss her now that she's gone.

Survivors include her three children, Shirley Dominy of Waverly, Beverly (Kenneth) Strong of Elgin, Roger (Doris) Howard of Elgin; two siblings, Alma Schreiner of West Union and Robert Hanson of Elgin; one son-in-law, Donald Bodensteiner of Iowa City; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Archie Howard; one daughter, Anne Bodensteiner; one sister, Gladys Hanson and one son-in-law, Donald Dominy.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa. The Rev. Rick Johnson will officiate.

Inurnment will be held in the Elgin Cemetery in Elgin, Iowa, at later date.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, from 4-8 p.m. at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elgin, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
