Fairbank Man Is Killed In France

Staff Sgt. DeWald Mechanic with Third Army.

Fairbank, Ia. -- A message from the war department Monday advised Mrs. Daniel M. DeWald that her husband, Staff Sgt. Daniel M. DeWald, was killed in action in France on Aug. 23. He was a mechanic in the Third army in France under the command of Lt. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.

He enlisted two years ago and left this country for England in February, 1944. The last letter that was received from him was written Aug. 18.

Born in Fairbank on Feb. 6, 1918, son of John and Edna Considine DeWald, his father was serving in World war I at the time of his birth. His mother died in 1941.

He was graduated from Fairbank high school in 1936 and married Miss Mildred Bushby at Fairbank, Oct. 3, 1940. They moved to a farm near Wadena and he also did some trucking for Pat Rastis. One child, Janet Kay, was born on Sept. 18, 1942. She survives as well as his widow and father.

The death message was received on the birthday anniversaries of both Sergeant DeWald's daughter and father.

Daniel Dewald, Wadena, Killed

Word that their nephew, Staff Sgt. Daniel Dewald, 26, of Wadena, Ia., was killed in France Aug. 23, was received here Wednesday by Mrs. H. E. Weitnauer, 1019 Lafayette street, and Thomas Flannagan, 301 Lafayette street. Sergeant Dewald enlisted for army service two years ago and had been overseas since February. He was a machinist's mate with Gen. George S. Patton's Third army in France. Survivors include his widow, the former Mildred Bushby, Fairbank, Ia., their daughter, Janet Kay, and his father, John Dewald, Wadena.

A vehicle accident at Mortain, France, proved fatal to Staff Sergeant Daniel DeWald, above, the War Department has informed his widow by letter. A telegram earlier said he died August 23. The Wadena soldier is survived by his widow, a small daughter and his father, John DeWald.
