Funeral services for Lois L. Whitcher Jahnke, 89, of West Union were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at West Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Scott Keele Kober officiated.

Music was provided by organist Steve Story and soloist Craig Moss.

Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. Casket bearers were Virgil Erickson, Kyle Whitcher, Earl Moss, Wade Whitcher, Rick Largesse, and Gay Bowden.

Arrangements were handled by Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, Iowa.

Lois died of age-related causes on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at her home.

Born June 20, 1920, near Winthrop, Lois Lavonne Love was the daughter of Harrison and Mary (Crawford) Love. She was one of three children.

Lois spent her early years on farms in Buchanan and Delaware counties. In her youth, she was baptized and received into membership of the Methodist church. Lois graduated from Lamont High School in 1938.

On July 7, 1946, she was united in marriage with Ralph F. Whitcher at the Methodist church in Fairbank. Five children were born to this union. The family made their home in West Union for a number of years.

After Ralph's death, Lois married William Jahnke at First United Methodist Church in Winterset. He also preceded her in death.

Lois was a member of West Union United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Mary Circle.

She was also a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 45 in Oelwein and had earlier served as Worthy Matron of the OES in West Union.

Reading, crossword puzzles and playing cards were among Lois' favorite activities.

In addition to her two husbands, Lois was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Bruce.

She is survived by three sons, Wendell (Marcia) Whitcher and Dean Whitcher, both of West Union, and Merle (Kris) Whitcher of Waverly; a daughter, Nancy (Dan) Foe of Seattle, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Judy Plambeck of Madison, Wis., and Kay Westerfield of Eugene, Ore.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Harvey Love of Aurora; and a sister, Marian Erickson of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews.
