Obituary Notice of Edward W. Clark

E. W. Clark was born at sea near Hartford, Conn., August 25, 1818, and died at Oelwein, Iowa, February 7, 1909, aged 90 years, 5 months, 13 days.

His father was a sea faring man and Mr. Clark followed the same vocation during his early life. When a young man Mr. Clark removed to Ohio where he was married to Miss Laura J. Bell who died September 20, 1874. They had a family of eleven children, seven of which are still living.

March 15, 1876 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Melissa Shippy and to the union were born two children. He is survived by his wife and the following children, all of whom were in attendance at the last services Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Maggie McGrath, Mrs. Clara Palmer, Mrs. Ella Anderson and Sanford Clark, of Kansas City, and Mrs. J. T. Bishop, Mrs. Dora Niblock, Mrs. Jap Woodward and Fred and Jesse Clark of Oelwein.

The last services were conducted from the Christian Church by Elder Amos Berve, of Davenport, assisted by Rev. McKim. The text of the discourse was Job XIX - 28-7 and Revelations XXII -12 .

Mr. Clark took up a 200 acre tract of land in the vicinity of Oelwein from the government in 1855. He was one of the best known old timers in this section, and he left seven children, thirty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren besides his wife to mourn his demise. And yet he had lived over twenty years beyond the three score and ten allowed to man and ripe in the fullness of years he fell asleep. He was a Universalist, and he cast his vote for Republican candidates from 1856 down to and including last fall's election. His first vote was cast for William Henry Harrison in 1840. His mental faculties were good up to the last and he related many interesting reminiscences of the old pioneer days of northeastern Iowa.
