Funeral services for Kenneth G. Springer, 87, of West Union, Iowa, were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union. The Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson and the Rev. David Grant officiated.

Providing music were organist Shelley Mohling and soloist Dale Halverson.

Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. Casket bearers were Keith Pump, Cody Pump, Staci Pump, Matt Burkey, Kristin Pates, Kayla Burkey, and Bryan Pates.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth died of age-related causes on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Kenneth George Springer was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Dover Township near West Union. The son of Charles and Selma (Koester) Springer, he was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado.

On Nov. 10, 1953, Kenneth was united in marriage with Norma Hammersland at Stavanger Lutheran Church near Ossian. Two daughters were born to this union.

Kenneth farmed southwest of West Union throughout most of his life.

He was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church and served on the church council.

He also served on the Fayette County Extension Council, was a 4-H leader, and served on the Dairy Council.

Kenneth enjoyed square dancing with wife Norma for over 40 years and was an officer for the NE Iowa Square Dance Association. In his leisure time he also enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and taking care of his lawn and flowers.

Kenneth's parents preceded him in death.

In addition to his wife, Norma, Kenneth is survived by two daughters, Julie Burkey of Fredericksburg and Sue (Larry) Pump of Rockford, Ia.; five grandchildren, Keith Pump of Chicago, Ill., Matt (Kayla) Burkey of Decorah, Kristin (Bryan) Pates of Ames, Cody Pump of Iowa City, and Staci Pump of Rockford.; and a sister, Jeanette Lueder of West Union.

Also surviving are sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Ada Boyce of Waverly, Harold (Gladys) Hammersland of Ossian, Clarice Larson of Chaseburg, Wis., Alice Hansen of Waverly, Sylvia Belschner and Marie (Franklin) Reyner, both of West Union; many other relatives and friends.
