A. Dean Platt 1919-2009

A. Dean Platt, 89, of Friendship Village, died at Friendship Village Retirement Center on Sunday, October 25, 2009.

He was born November 20, 1919 in Oelwein, IA, son of George and Hazel Horning Platt.

Dean married Lee Morf June 4, 1942 in Ames.

He graduated from Oelwein High School and received his Bachelor Degree from Iowa State University in Nursery Management. He founded Platt's Nursery in 1944.

He was a member of Downtown Rotary Club since 1945, a member of First Presbyterian Church for 64 years where he served as an Elder, the No Name Club, Associated Investor's Club, and Toastmasters. He was named to Iowa Nurserymen's Association Hall of Fame in 1989, the Order of Pythagoras of Acacia Fraternity in 2009, and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International four times.

Dean enjoyed sailing, hunting, fishing, reading, and traveling throughout the U.S. with his family as well as to countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Greece, Israel, England, Cuba, the Scandinavian countries, the Far East and numerous times to Mexico. Dean also trademarked a sugar maple that turns completely red in the fall, calling it the Fall Red Maple.

Dean is survived by his wife Lee Platt of Waterloo, son Richard Dean (Marsha) Platt of Waterloo, daughter Ann (Gary) Fergemann of Kalamazoo, MI, grandson Brian (Katarzyna) Fergemann of Chicago, IL, grandson David Fergemann of Atlanta, GA, granddaughter Caitlyn (Trever) Sittig of New Hampton, IA, granddaughter Allison Platt of Waterloo, IA, granddaughter Breanna Platt of Waterloo, IA, great granddaughter Olivia Fergemann of Chicago, IL, sister Mae (Merv) Coover of Washington, sister Aris Montgomery of Colorado, and brother Robert Platt of California.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Lloyd.
