OELWEIN — Funeral services for Donald LeRoy King will be 11
a.m. Monday, May 14, at Grace United Methodist Church, Oelwein, with
the Rev. Dave Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Hazleton Cemetery,
with military rites conducted by Ross Reid American Legion Post 9 of
Oelwein.
Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the
Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, and after
10 a.m. Monday at the church.
Mr. King, 78, died Friday morning, May 11,
2001, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein,
after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 6,1923, at Arlington, the son
of Lawrence Floyd and Mary Blanche (Burger)
King. He attended Oelwein High School where he
lettered in three sports, football, basketball and track.
He married Pauline Ruth Jarchow on Feb. 15, J942,
at Maynard, Don was a veteran of World War II,-
serving in the U.S. Army with the 508 Paratrooper Infantry in the 82nd
Airborne. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He farmed east
of Oelwein, was a journeyman electrician and later co-managed the
Parkview Motel in Oelwein with his wife, Pauline, for 11 years, retiring
in 1986. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the
Fireside Fellowship Group, a member of Ross Reid American Legion
Post 9, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a lifetime
member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a longtime Oelwein
area resident.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline; one son, Larry (Teresita) of
Gulfport, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Doris Beier of Waterloo, and Darlene (Dick) Chado of Upland, Calif.; and
a daughter-in-law, Linda King of Oelwein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter. Donna Jean;
two sons, Terry Lee and Ronald; and three brothers, Darrel and two
brothers at birth.
Memorials may be given in his name to Grace United Methodist
Church of Oelwein.
