Henry Porter 1832-1912

Henry Porter was born in Addison
county, Vermont, April 4, 1832. He
died near Oelwein, Iowa, January 11,
1912, aged 78 years, 9 months and 7
days. In early life he united with the
Baptist church. At the age of 17 he
came to Illinois where he worked for
some time. . Later (about 1855) he
came to Bremer county, Iowa, where
he bought 160 acres of land from the
government at $1.25 per acre.
When the Civil war began he enlisted
in the 31st Iowa Infantry. He
was united in marriage with Miss
Louisa M. Bailey October 31, 1866. Of
this union were born five children,
two of whom died in infancy. The
three living daughters are Mrs. Minnie
Olds, of Buck Creek, Iowa, Mrs.
Maggie Watts of Oelwein, Iowa, and,
Mrs. Maud Mills of Smith Center, Kansas.
In 1832 Mr. Porter retired from the
farm and moved to Waverly, Iowa.
Here his wife died from an illness that
lasted but one hour. After the death
of his wife he came to Oelwein to live
with his daughter, Mrs. Watts. On
August 9, 1910, he was married to
Mrs. Clark of Oelwein. The wife
With tlie three daughters and six
grandchildren are bereft of a kind
husband and parent
Funeral services were conducted
Sunday at 2:30 p. m. at the home of
Mrs. Maggie Watts, 21-3rd street N.,
Oelwein, Iowa. Rev. A. H. Nickell,
pastor of the Baptist church, was in
charge of the service. Burial took
place in the Grove Hill cemetery, Oran,
Iowa, on Monday a. m., January
15, 1912.
