Funeral services for Mary A. Pixler, 53, of Oelwein, Iowa, were held Friday, Sept. 4, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa. The Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiated. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.

Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary's death occurred at her home Wednesday morning, Sept. 2, 2009, after a battle with breast cancer.

Mary Alice (Waldschmidt) Pixler was born May 24, 1956, in Iowa City. She was the daughter of Francis and Lucile (Kron) Waldschmidt.

Mary graduated from Highland High School in Riverside in 1974. She received her B.A. in sociology from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, in 1978.

On Sept. 9, 1978, Mary was united in marriage with Dennis Ralph Pixler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

She worked in the business office at Upper Iowa University in Fayette but later left to be a caretaker for Dennis' mom, Opal Pixler, at their home in Oelwein for 26 years. Mary also worked at Marilyn's Hallmark Shop in Oelwein for several years.

She was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church in Oelwein.

In serving her community, Mary crocheted afghans for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life cancer survivors the last few years.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Pixler, of Oelwein, formerly of West Union; her parents, Francis and Lucile Waldschmidt of Iowa City; four sisters, LuAnn (Randy) DeGood of Riverside, Barbara Hayek of Clutier, Regina (Dan) Snyder of Riverside, and Rita (Steve) Best of Greenville, S.C.; 12 nieces and nephews; and a great-nephew.

A memorial fund has been established in Mary Pixler's name.
