Phyllis J. Smith, 67, of West Union, Iowa, formerly of Walker, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 5, at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Interment was in Grandview Cemetery, Fayette, with Jay Sandberg, Ryan Amfahr, Tyler Smith, Brett Vanous, Brad Vanous, and Taylor Smith as honorary casket bearers.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, handled the arrangements.

Phyllis Jeanine (Miller) Smith, daughter of William Jackson and June Evelyn (Rhines) Miller, was born Sept. 30, 1941, in Edgewood. She was baptized at United Methodist Church in Edgewood.

Phyllis was a graduate of Strawberry Point High School. She attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette and Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.

On Sept. 3, 1961, Phyllis was united in marriage with Stanley G. Smith at Trinity Methodist Church in Edgewood. Four children were born to this union.

Phyllis was retired from AEGON U.S.A. in Cedar Rapids with 25 years of service in the Financial Markets Division.

She and Stan lived in Walker for many years before moving recently to West Union, where Phyllis was a member of West Union American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15.

She enjoyed her family, reading, gardening, holidays, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Stanley; her children, Robin (Rick) Amfahr of Independence, Cathi (Radell) Robertson of Mediapolis, Bill Smith of Aurora, and Shawn (Kristi) Smith of Masonville; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Robert (JoAnne) Miller and John (Pat Miller), both of Marion.
