Pioneer Resident is Laid to Rest

Charles Pliny Sayles was born at Richmond, McHenry County, Illinois, on the first day of January 1849 and died at his home in this city on March 20, 1921. He had reached the age of 72 years, 2 months and 20 days.

He lived in his native state until the year 1864 when he moved, with his parents, to Iowa and settled on a farm five miles southeast of Oelwein.

On New Years day, 1882 he was joined in marriage with Emma D. Donniston.

After two years they purchased the home place from Mr. Sayles' father and established a home for the father with themselves. Here they resided until the year 1902 when they sold the farm and purchased a small plat of land north of Oelwein. They lived there until a little over a year ago when they purchased and moved into the present home on North Frederick street.

Besides his devoted wife Mr. Sayles leaves one brother, J. S. Sayles of this city and an invalid sister, Mrs. Alice Clark of Independence, to cherish his memory.

Funeral services conducted by his pastor, Dr. W. C. Cloworth, at the Methodist Church, Tuesday afternoon were attended by a very large number of friends. The members of the Woman's Relief Corps attended in a body. Interment was made in the family lot at Otsego Cemetery.
