Obituary Notice of Silas D. Sayles

The last services for Silas D. Sayles were held from the residence of his son, Charles Sayles in this city Monday at 2 p.m., Rev. George Kennedy officiating. A large number of the friends and neighbors of this venerable man were in attendance and followed the remains to the last resting place.

Silas D. Sayles was born in Onondagua county, New York, August 1, 1920 and died in this city April 18, 1908, his age being eighty-seven years, eight months and eighteen days. In 1844 he came to Illinois and settled in McHenry county where he resided till 1864 when he came to Fayette county, Iowa, and purchased a farm four and one-half miles southeast of Oelwein. In 1848 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Alice Wray, of McHenry county, Illinois. She preceded him to the better land twenty-six years ago, since which time he has made his home with his son Charles. To this union were born six children, four of whom survive him; Charles and John of this city, Mrs. Alice Clark, of Independence, and Mrs. Mary George, Fairbank. There are also three grandchildren, two brothers, four sisters, besides other relatives to mourn his loss.

By Mr. Sayles death the community has lost one of its leading men and a patriotic citizen. Only those who knew the kindly old man in the last years might not realize it as those who knew him in the activity of former years.

Ever on the side of right, the children may well rise up and call his memory blessed. Ready with help and sympathy, no neighbor ever suffered pain or sorrow alone. Honest and upright he gave every man his due, and asked no praise.

Alway a temperance man, when the prohibition movement was begun he gave his voice and vote for God and home and native land. A loving husband, a devoted father, a friend staunch and true.

Oelwein Register - April 22, 1908
Note - burial at Otsego Cemetery, SE of Oelwein
