Funeral services for Lester Warnke, 89, of Oelwein, Iowa, will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, with the Revs. Leo and Charis Combs-Lay officiating.

Visitation was scheduled for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, and for one hour before the service at the church today.

Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein. Military services will be conducted by the Maynard American Legion post.

Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, is handling the arrangements.

Lester died Friday evening, Aug. 7, 2009, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein.

Lester Warnke was born Oct. 20, 1919, in rural Sumner to Carl and Clara (Mohlis) Warnke.

He received his education from the rural Sumner schools.

Lester served in the U.S. Army for three years in Europe during World War II.

On Oct. 2, 1945, he was united in marriage with Helen Lucille Fox in Fairbank.

He worked at Fridley Feed Mill in Sumner for five years and then farmed near Oelwein for many years. Lester and Helen later retired and moved to Oelwein.

Lester was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Maynard American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret Seehase; and an infant brother.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Warnke of Oelwein; a son, Leon (Karen) Warnke of Jackson Junction; a daughter, Lois (Craig) Hatteberg of Savanna, Ill.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo (Vera) Warnke of Huron, S.D., and Raymond (Marjorie) Warnke of Maynard; and three sisters, Doretta Seehase, Mildred Judisch, and Verona Pries, all of Sumner.
