Funeral services for Margaret L. Meyer, 90, of Sumner, Iowa, were held Tuesday, Aug. 11, at St. John Lutheran Church, Sumner, with intern Jealaine Marple officiating.

Burial was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Westgate, with military rites conducted by Thomas E. Woods American Legion Post 223 of Sumner.

Casket bearers were MSgt. Jason Arneson, Allen "C.J." Davis, Ryan Sampson, and Aries Davis.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret's death occurred Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner following a brief illness.

Margareth Louisa (Plaster) Meyer, daughter of Gustave E. and Ada (Zummak) Plaster, was born Feb. 17, 1919, in Oran. She was baptized March 9, 1919, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oran by the Rev. H. Kovac and confirmed May 15, 1932, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Westgate by the Rev. Otto C. Schultz.

Margaret attended St. Peter's Parochial School in Westgate and graduated from West Central High School in 1977.

She was united in marriage with L. Luverne Meyer on Sept. 14, 1940, at the Naval Chapel in Pensacola, Fla., by the Rev. E.M. Davis.

After her marriage, Margaret worked for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. She served with the United States Marines as a private first class from 1943-1945. After her military service, Margaret worked at several grocery stores in West Union and Fayette.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.

Margaret was a life member of the Thomas E. Woods American Legion Post 223 of Sumner, a past member of the International Women's Marine Association, and the Iowa Chapter (The Rose) of the Women's Marine Association. She was a charter member of the Women in Military Service of American Veterans at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., and the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, La. Margaret was also a member and past president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 6.

She volunteered at nursing homes and hospitals and served on the Fayette County Veterans Commission and the Fayette County Veterans Memorial Committee.

She had taught Sunday school in Fairbank and Fayette and served on the finance board at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson; two brothers, Frederick and Paul Plaster; and a sister, Evelyn Hoth.

She is survived by two daughters, Rachel L. Sampson of Evansville, Ind., and Mary E. Arneson of Bellevue, Neb.; four grandchildren; a stepgranddaughter; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Yungtum of Sumner; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
