Former area resident Laverne E. Reisner, 82, of Red Wing, Minn., died at his home on Friday, July 31, 2009.

Funeral services are pending in Red Wing.

Laverne Everett Reisner, son of Everett and Laura (Rothmeyer) Reisner, was born Jan. 20, 1927, on a farm near Hawkeye, Iowa.

Raised on a farm near West Union, he attended school in Hawkeye.

Laverne farmed most of his life, first in the Postville and Cascade areas in Iowa. In 1970, he and his family moved to Minnesota; there, they settled on a farm near Red Wing, where he worked until his retirement in 1992.

Laverne served in the U.S. Army from April 1945 to November 1946, spending 13 months in Japan and attaining the rank of T45.

On Sept. 7, 1950, he was united in marriage to Donna Lou Harris at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union. To this union three children were born.

Laverne was an active member of First Covenant Church, Red Wing.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Gene in 1934 and Donald in 1975; and a granddaughter in 1983.

Laverne is survived by his wife, Donna, of Red Wing; two sons, Dennis (Karen) Reisner of Fountain, Minn., and David (Danni Sue) Reisner of Goodhue, Minn.; a daughter, Diane (Jessi) Hammel of Stewartville, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Etta (Mrs. John) Gage of West Union; and a brother, Dale (Mary) Reisner of Traer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Covenant Church, Red Wing, Minn., and/or to cancer research.
