Audrey Smorstad, 83, of Decorah, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 4, at Glenwood Lutheran Church, Decorah, with the Rev. Douglas Mathison officiating.

Interment was in Pontoppidan Cemetery in Decorah. Casket bearers were Jim Drilling, Carl Smorstad, Chuck Scholbrock, John Loven, Eric Smorstad and Roy Prestsater.

Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Audrey Marie (Osterhus) Smorstad was born Sept. 18, 1925, south of Ossian. She was the daughter of Milford and Alma (Hauge) Osterhus. She was baptized Oct. 25, 1925, and confirmed Sept. 24, 1939, by the Rev. Shefueland at First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian.

Audrey attended school at Dover No. 6 country school in Fayette County and graduated from West Union High School in 1943.

She went to work that fall at a restaurant for two years. She then began working in the office of Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo.

On Dec. 1, 1948, Audrey was united in marriage with Harris L. Smorstad by the Rev. E.O. Ulring at First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian. To this union, a son and twin daughters were born.

The couple started farming in 1949 at their present farm in Glenwood Township, where they continued for many years. They also owned and operated a repair shop from 1984 to 2000, when Audrey retired.

She was a member of the Pontoppidan Lutheran Church and later joined Glenwood Lutheran Church. She was active in her church circle, Ladies' Aid, and had taught Sunday school for many years.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harris, in 1994; and three brothers, Ahlert, Otto and Kenneth Osterhus.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Deb) Smorstad of Decorah; two daughters, Judy (Jim) Drilling of Calmar and Jo (Charles) Scholbrock of Waucoma; two grandsons; four nieces and a nephew.
