Funeral services for former area resident Melvina Gibson, 97, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Waterloo, were held Friday, July 3, at Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo. Interment was in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Melvina's death occurred Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at The Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Melvina (Hoover) Gibson was born Aug. 9, 1911, in West Union to William and Christina (Thorson) Hoover.

She graduated from Elgin High School in 1929. She received her RN nurse's training at Presbyterian Hospital, Waterloo, graduating in 1932.

Melvina worked as a registered nurse in private-duty nursing and then at Schoitz Memorial Hospital for many years.

On April 26, 1937, she married C. Laverne Gibson in LaSalle, Ill. She and her husband owned and operated Gibson Specialty for 15 years. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1984.

Melvina was a member of Cedar Valley Community Church and was a Sunday school teacher for 22 years.

She also served as a Girl Scout troop leader and organized the Girl Scout program at Emerson and Roosevelt Elementary schools.

In addition to her husband, Melvina was preceded in death by a brother, Jacob Hoover; six sisters, Clara Hoover, Barbara Winter, Margaret Mays, Virginia Sorenson, Fern Adolphson and Irene Nesteby; two half brothers, John Overhus and Bert Overhus; and a half sister, Ella Reed.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Gary) Scoggin of Dubuque and Carol (Larry) Spencer of Buckingham; a son, Richard (Marjorie) Gibson of Fishers, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Bill Hoover and George Hoover; nieces and a nephew.

Memorials may be directed to Bethany Home Foundation or the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross.
