James Thomas "Tom" Sawyer, 70, died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Buchanan County Health Center of natural causes.
At his request, no services are planned. Burial will be at a later date at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein, Iowa.
Tom was born March 31, 1939 in Iowa City, the son of James Thomas and Laura Marie Sawyer. He attended Oelwein schools and married JoAnn Hufford, Feb. 24, 1961 in Iowa City. Tom worked construction and was a welder for many years.
Survivors include his wife JoAnn of Des Moines; five children, Jeannie (Jeff) Frazer of Oelwein, Mary Butler of Russellville, Ark., Lori (Tony) Greene of Coon Rapids, Robin (Ron) Eason of Eldora, and Sheri Maddison of Des Moines; three stepchildren, Jackie (Mike) Gage of Wadena, Shawn Sawyer of California and Jamie Mendez of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Juanita Neilson of California, Laura Maria Flageolile of Colorado and Norma Jean Blumenshine of Independence and many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brothers David, John Frederick; and aunts and uncles.
Memorials may be directed to the family in care of Jeannie Frazer, 9635 E. Airline Hwy, Dunkerton, IA 50626.
