Roberta Mae Steward was born on July 14, 1926 in Oelwein, Iowa at the home of her parents, Walter Vernon and Mildred Marie Steward. She married George William Bark at the age of 17. George farmed and built a house for them in the country about one mile from Stanley. Roberta became a typical farm wife, gardening, canning, cooking and cleaning, helping with the chores, and popping lots of popcorn when friends came over. Her husband also played in a band for square dances and they practiced in their homes. In 1953, George died. Roberta sold the farm and returned to Oelwein where she and her daughter lived with her parents. She worked at a nursing home, as a waitress, babysitter and finally on the cleaning staff at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein. She worked there until retirement age. She had lived in Montezuma since 2006. Roberta was a member of the Church of Christ Eastside in Oelwein, where she had served as a youth leader, teacher and custodian when growing up.
