Marie H. Jacobsen, 90, of West Union, Iowa, died of age-related causes Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at her home.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union, with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Providing music were organist Linda Johansen and soloist Dale Halverson.

Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. Casket bearers were Marie's niece Karen Schmitz and nephews Kevin Jacobsen, Kendall Jacobsen, Kirk Jacobsen, Kerry Jacobsen, Kyle Jacobsen, Kory Jacobsen and Kalen Jacobsen.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, handled the arrangements.

Marie Hazel Jacobsen was born July 28, 1918, on a farm near West Union. She was the daughter of James and Hazel (Musser) Jacobsen.

Marie was a 1936 graduate of West Union High School. She attended summer school at Upper Iowa University; after her graduation from UIU, she did graduate work at the University of Northern Iowa.

After teaching school at various positions for 42 years, Marie retired in 1980 as a third-grade teacher at West Union Elementary.

Conservation, nature study and writing were among her interests and priorities.

For many years Marie was a member of the Iowa Poetry Association and received annual publication of poems in "Lyrical Iowa."

Promoting "Operation Christmas Child" had been a community commitment in recent years. Marie believed every Christian is called to minister the Gospel.

As a longtime active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder and in other capacities.

Those left to cherish Marie's memory are her brother, Charles (Dolores) Jacobsen of West Union; her niece, Karen (Victor) Schmitz of West Union; her nephews Kendall and Kyle Jacobsen of West Union, Kevin (Linda) Jacobsen of St. Charles, Mo., Kirk (Dawn) Jacobsen and Kerry (Lisa) Jacobsen of Clermont, Kory (Erin) Jacobsen of Ridgeway, Kalen (Kathleen) Jacobsen of Walford; and 19 great-nieces and -nephews.
