Marjorie A. Jermeland, 82, of West Union, Iowa, died of age-related causes on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the West Union Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 5, at First Lutheran Church, rural West Union. The Rev. Dennis Hugdahl officiated.

Burial was in the West Union Cemetery. Todd Jermeland, Travis Jermeland, Colter Kelly, Stacey Massman, Carissa Kelly and Danielle Jermeland were the pallbearers.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

Born Jan. 20, 1927, on a farm near Castalia, Marjorie Amanda was the daughter of Peter and Nora (Kleppe) Walvatne. She was baptized at First Lutheran Church and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Ossian.

Marjorie attended country school, completing the eighth grade, before her family moved to West Union.

On April 15, 1945, she married Norman Oliver Jermeland at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Ossian. Five children were born to this union. Living in West Union all her married life, Marjorie cleaned local homes and worked at the Rex Hotel in the early years of her marriage.

She became a resident of the West Union Good Samaritan Center on March 21, 2001, due to failing health.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Norman, on June 16, 1999; two brothers, Lawrence (Mayme) Walvatne and Palmer (Merna) Walvatne; and three sisters, Josie (Elmer) Johnson, Myrtle and Elvina Walvatne.

Marjorie is survived by three sons, David (Beverly) Jermeland of West Union, Joel (Karen) Jermeland of Decorah, Mark (Carrie) Jermeland of Denver, Ia.; two daughters, Rebecca (Don) Kelly of Hawkeye and Mary (Keith) Hennig of Evansville, Wis.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
