Irene D. Klisart, 85, of Ossian, Iowa, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Ossian Senior Hospice after a battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Monsignor Cletus J. Hawes at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, Ossian, on Tuesday, May 26.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Irene Dorothy (Torkelson) Klisart was born to Alfred and Minnie (Schweinefus) Torkelson on July 30, 1923, in rural Ossian, Dover Township, Fayette County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian.

Irene received her education at the rural school near her home.

On Nov. 19, 1946, she was wed to Robert Klisart, after which she joined the Catholic Church.

Following her marriage Irene worked with her husband, Robert, in their business. In later years she worked as a cook at South Winneshiek Community School for 10 years. She also sold World Book Encyclopedias for 20 years.

Irene was a member of the St. Francis DeSales Rosary Society and a circle leader.

Preceding her in death were her parents; an infant son, Richard, in 1947; two brothers, Art Torkelson in 1982 and Walter Torkelson in 1991; four sisters, Marjorie Lenth in 1993, Evelyn Staska in 1999, Inez Chensvold in 2002, and Florence Schrandt in 2009.

Survivors include Irene's husband, Robert Klisart; two daughters, Shirley (Steve) Robinson of Hampton and Nancy (Dale) Schwickerath of Newton; five grandsons; two great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.
