Arlene Lauer, 88, of West Union, Iowa, died of an age-related illness on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the West Union Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, with the Rev. Dennis Hugdahl officiating. Richard Vagts provided organ music.

Interment was in the church cemetery. Casket bearers were Roger Hageman, Brad Ellison, David Gross, John Shultz, Michael Peich and John Grafenberg.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

Arlene R. (Weitenhagen) Lauer was born July 19, 1920, near Hawkeye. She was the daughter of August and Helen (Knoll) Weitenhagen.

After her graduation from Randalia High School in 1937, she worked at home until she married.

On June 23, 1946, Arlene was united in marriage with Eugene Lauer at the Lutheran Church in Hawkeye.

They couple lived and farmed near Eldorado until Eugene's death in 1970. Arlene then moved to West Union and was a longtime employee of Dessel's Furniture.

She enjoyed fishing at the Mississippi River, hunting morel mushrooms, and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her husband, Eugene, Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clarence and Harley Weitenhagen; a sister, Margaret Ellison; and two nephews, Don Pleggenkuhle and Hal Weitenhagen.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Alice Rose of Tampa, Fla.; sister-in-law, Daisy Weitenhagen of Sumner; and her nieces and nephews, Laurie (Robert) Shultz of Greene, Dianne (Mike) Peich of Westchester, Pa., Patty Flitte of Sioux Falls, S.D., Brad (Linda) Ellison of Fredericksburg, Greg (Mary) Ellison of Urbandale, Mike (Deb) Weitenhagen of California, Dean Weitenhagen of Des Moines, and their families.
