Funeral services for Lester F. Niewoehner, 95, of Hawkeye, Iowa, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, with the Rev. William Horn officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday.

Interment will be in the Hawkeye Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Connie Popenhagen, Mark Ruedy, Bradley Niewoehner, Todd Ruedy, Kimberly Chayet, Kristine Niewoehner, and David Chayet.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Hawkeye, is in charge of arrangements.

Lester's death from natural causes occurred Sunday, May 24, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union.

Lester Friederich Niewoehner, son of Henry and Minnie (Schlatter) Niewoehner, was born July 18, 1913, in Hawkeye. He was baptized Aug. 10, 1913, and confirmed April 1, 1928, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye.

On Nov. 18, 1936, Lester was united in marriage with Hazel Henniges at the Presbyterian Church in Maynard. Lester and Hazel farmed southwest of Hawkeye for many years. They moved into Hawkeye in 1967. Hazel preceded Lester in death on June 5, 1998.

Lester was an active member of his church and community. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, where he served on the Church Council. He had also served on the Hawkeye City Council, was a member of the Hawkeye Conservation Club and a Hawkeye Co-op board member.

In addition to his wife, Hazel, Lester was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Norma Hoeger, Doris Henniges, and Sally Shermer.

Survivors include his son, Dean (Marilyn) Niewoehner of Hawkeye; two daughters, Jean (Paul) Nuss of Hawkeye and June (Fred) Ruedy of Naples, Fla.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
