Robert D. Clausen, 85, of West Union, Iowa, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

A Celebration of Life service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union.

Interment was in the West Union Cemetery.

The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa assisted the family.

Robert Dale Clausen was born May 4, 1923, in Comfrey, Minn., to Charles and Hazel (Williams) Clausen.

After graduating from high school in Comfrey, he enlisted in the Army and was in the 8th Army Air Force, 232nd AAF Bomber Unit during WWII.

On Jan. 18, 1948, Robert married Wilma Seavert in Comfrey, Minn.

He owned and operated a SuperValu store in Comfrey for 15 years. He also owned and operated Gamble's Hardware Store in Luverne, Minn., for five years, as well as worked as an installer for Northco Equipment for three years.

Robert enjoyed being plant manager at Heying Foods in West Union for 15 years. After retirement, he worked at Pharmaceutical Innovators.

Robert was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey, Minn., and was secretary of that church for 23 years. While in Comfrey, he was a member of the American Legion and a volunteer fireman for 20 years.

Robert was on the Zion Lutheran Council in West Union.

He loved woodworking and playing golf.

Preceding Robert in death were his parents; two sisters, Lucille Gatzlaff and Luann Madson; and a brother, Verle Clausen.

He is survived by Wilma, his wife of 61 years; four children, Lynne (Steve) Eberlein of Maple Grove, Minn., Neal (Ann) Clausen of Blooming Prairie, Minn., James (Amy) Clausen of West Union, and Julie (Ron Peters) Clausen of Prior Lake, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Sean Griffin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Christopher and Michael Griffin, both of Lansing, Mich., Amanda Clausen of Washington, D.C., Trenton Clausen, Madison Clausen, and Dalton Wenthe, all of West Union; and a brother-in-law, DuWayne Madson of Butterfield, Minn.
