Funeral services for John A. Meyer, 65, of West Union, Iowa, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Providing music were organist Linda Johansen and vocalist John O. Falb.

Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. Jere Meyer, Julie Thien, Eric Meyer, Chris Robinson, Paul Meyer, Janene Roudebush, Hilary Roy, Alison Stewart and Emily Schroder were the honorary casket bearers.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

John's death occurred Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following injuries sustained in a farming accident.

John Arthur Meyer, son of Leo and Wanda (Long) Meyer, was born Oct. 15, 1943, in West Union.

He attended rural Fayette County schools through eighth grade and graduated from North High School, West Union, in 1961. He attended Upper Iowa University for a year.

On June 5, 1966, John was united in marriage with Kathryn Eileen Schroder. Three children were born to this union. They've farmed the family farm since John's father's death in 1960. This year John was looking forward to planting his 50th crop.

Active in his community and church, John served as a board director at Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank. He was a 50-year member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, a Youth Group leader (chaperoning the Boundary Waters trip), and a member of the church choir.

John also bowled in the Monday Night Couples League for many years. He loved to spend time outdoors, especially time spent in his timber. He and his family enjoyed many picnics in the woods.

John's parents preceded him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathy, of West Union; his three children, Michael John (Carie) Meyer of Houston, Texas, Michelle Kathryn (Chris) DeMeyer of Swisher, and Andrew Arthur (LeAnn) Meyer of West Union; six grandchildren, Jordan, Olivia, Payton and Drew DeMeyer and Alex and Emma Meyer.

Additional survivors include two brothers, Richard (Janice) Meyer of Burnsville, Minn., and Robert (Judy) Meyer of Kirkland, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Carol (Roger) Robinson of Masonville; and a brother-in-law, Jeffrey (Gwen) Schroder of Indianola.

John was a special friend to many, and he will be missed.
