Verla Mae Mittelstadt 1918-2009

Verla Mae Mittelstadt, 90, of Eldorado, Iowa, died Monday, April 20, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, following a long illness.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 27, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, with the Rev. Dennis Hugdahl officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements.

Verla Mae (Kinsel) Mittelstadt was born Aug. 22, 1918, in Postville to George and Rosena (Heckmann) Kinsel.

She attended country school through the eighth grade.

On May 18, 1940, Verla was united in marriage with Edwin Mittelstadt in West Union. Three children were born to this union.

In addition to being a homemaker, Verla worked for several local restaurants. She was also in charge of the bookwork for the family business, Eddie's Garage, in Eldorado.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado.

Verla enjoyed traveling with Eddie to antique-engine shows, camping, cooking and gardening. She loved spending time with her family and friends and will be deeply missed.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin, in January 1997; two brothers, Orville and Carl "Buddy" Kinsel; five sisters, Viola Klemme, Faye Kinsel, Fern Kinsel, Diane Kinsel and Juanita "Dolly" Kinsel.

Survivors include three children, Linda (Richard) Saunders of Torrance, Calif., Kenneth (Patti) Mittelstadt of Elgin, Wayne (Fenglian) Mittelstadt of Redondo Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren, Christine (Garry) Purcell, Richard "Rick" Saunders, Wade (Carol) Mittelstadt, Warren (Cassie) Mittelstadt, and Megan Mittelstadt.

Additional survivors include seven great-grandchildren, Nicholas (Elizabeth), Jarred and Taylor Purcell, Nicole and Austin Mittelstadt, Tucker and Addison Mittelstadt; two great-great-grandchildren, Jordan and Brayton; a sister, Laura (Arnie) Schappert of Cedar Rapids; a nephew, Darrin (Angie) Schappert; and a host of other family and friends.
