Obituary -
Mary K. Oakes was born in Lycoming
county, Penn., March 4, 1848.
When she was but one year old her
parents moved to Ogle county, Ill.
Here she grew to womanhood and
Dec. 14, 1870 she was united in marriage
to William C. Disher of the same
place. In 1876 they came to Iowa
and purchased a farm in Scott township,
Fayette county, where they resided
five years when they removed
to Cherokee county, buying another
farm and where her husband died
Aug. 31, 1886.
A few years later she sold her
farm and returned to Stanley, later
taking up her residence in Oelwein
which place has since been her home.
She leaves to mourn her going two
brothers and one sister, Hiram S.
Oakes, of Stanley, Iowa; William
Oakes, of Cherokee; and Mrs. Martha
Rock, of Camby, Minn., beside other
relatives and a host of friends to
whom she has endeared herself. Early
in life she became a Christian and for
the past six years has had her church
membership in the Methodist Episcopal
church of this city and has been
one of the most faithful members tho
church, the Aid Society or tbe Missionary
Society ever had and during
the past few months that sickness
kept her from attending at the various
meetings, her absence was sadly
felt on account of the vacant chair.
She has been one of the most willing
to forward the completion of the new
church edifice. She was useful to a
remarkable degree and ever stood
ready to lend a helping hand whenever
and wherever needed and when
the voice cause saying, well done thou
good and faithful servant, enter thou
into the joy of thy Lord, she was ready to go.
