WESTGATE NEWS

Grandma Hopka, who has been, making
her home with her son Mortz, between
here and Oelwein, was burned
so severely last Friday morning that
she succomed Sunday about noon. She
lived with her son but, had her own
rooms. No one seems to know just exactly
how she caught fire, but it is
supposed that she was poking the fire
with a wooden stick that she used for
that purpose and the stick caught
fire and ignited her apron. The first
that anyone knew about it was when
her daughter-in-law found her on the
front porch burning. The fire was put
out immediately and she was put to
bed and the doctor summoned. Her
hands, face and one limb we're badly
burned. Everything was done to relieve
her intense suffering and to save
her life but she was so old and; her injuries
such that she died on Sunday.

1834 at Krlmnitz, Province of Brandenburg,
Germany, and died at the
home of her son Mortz on Sunday,
Dec. 20, 1914, at the age of 81 years
4 months and 19 days, She was baptised
and confirmed at an early age
and has since been a faithful member
of the Lutheran church. In 1859 she
was married to Gottlieb Hopka, who
died Dec. 7,. 1911. In 1893 the family
moved to this county and settled on
the old Hopka farm south of town.
She was troubled with asthma, otherwise
she was in good health; She
leaves to mourn her loss four boys and
one daughter, namely — Herman, Will,
Paul and Mortz and Mrs. Paulina Llnder.

Peter's Lutheran church Wednesday
