Jonas Schrack was the youngest of nine children born
to John and Betsy Schrack.
The family were residents of Pennsylvania removing
later to Illinois near the city of Freeport where Mr.
Schrack was born.
His parents moved to Iowa in 1854 and settled on a
government claim in Black Hawk County six miles
North of Dunkerton where their son Jonas grew to
manhood, with the exception of two years which he
spent in Missouri.
He was married in 1875 to Nellia Geyer whose death
occurred a short time later leaving a tiny baby girl
who was taken from him at the age of eleven months.
On March 20, 1880 he was united in marriage with
Frances Pettit of Waterloo and they made their home
on the old homestead until 1891 when they moved to
a farm three miles east of Fairbank. In 1906 the
family moved into Fairbank. Four years ago Mr. and
Mrs. Schrack moved to Oelwein where Mr. Schrack has
been employed in the Chicago Great Western Railway

at the shops and seemed in his usual health. He spent

and family but shortly after retiring was stricken with
a severe pain in his heart. The physician was
summoned immediately but from the start gave no
hope of his recovery. He suffered great pain for 24
hours and death came to his relief at 2 o'clock Sunday
morning April 5th. Mr. Schrack united with the
