DICKEY, CHETISLER, DOWNING, BAYNESS, MICHELS

Edward Hale Dickey was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania,
November 20th, 1852 and died at his home near Oelwein, Iowa
April 13th, 1933 at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 22 days.
He came with his parents to Independence, Ia., when but a small
child, but with the exception of a few years spent at that place, has
lived in Fayette County ever since.
On January 27th, 1870 he was united in marriage with Augusta A.
Chetisler at Independence, Iowa.
After living here for a couple of years or more, he moved with his
wife and baby son to a 160 acre farm northwest of Westgate, later
on coming into possession of same and residing there for nearly
50 years, when he decided to make a change and moved near
Oelwein, where he still continued to carry on his chosen occupation
of farming and was able to stay by it, until about two years ago
when he found the work too strenous for his declining strength and
years. His farm work however did not completely take up his time
as he was a great reader and kept himself well informed as to the
current news and events of the day.
That he had gained the interest and respect of the community in
which he had lived so long, was shown by the fact that for over 30
years he held the office of clerk of Fremont Township, and other
minor offices at different times.
For many years he was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Sumner,
Iowa.
Born to his marriage were five children all of whom but one being
granted the privilege with the help of their mother of ministering
to the needs and wishes of their father, throughout the last two
weeks of his illness. But all that loving hands could do was of
no avail and he passed peacefully away at about 4:15, Tuesday
afternoon in the presence of his wife and family and a few near
relatives. He was the last survivor of a large family of children
nearly all of whom had lived to a good age and he was the son of
Alexander and Mary Dickey.
He was preceded in death by one son Willie H. who passed away
at the tender age of 7 years on February 1, 1891.
Those left to mourn loss are his wife Addie and children, Elston E.
Dickey of Oelwein; Mae Downing of Westgate; Addie Bayness of
near Oelwein and Mable Michels of Westgate, ten grandchildren and
thirteen great grandchildren.

Oelwein Daily Register - 19 April 1933
Note - records indicate burial at Greenwood cemetery, Westgate.
