Lester Meyer

Lester Meyer, 89, well-known Maquoketa resident, died Saturday, Sept. 29, at his home at 301 S. Jones Ave.

Services were held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the United Methodist Church, Maquoketa. The Rev. Del Dawes officiated.

Burial was in West Union Cemetery, in West Union. Carson Funeral Home, Maquoketa, was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Meyer was born Nov. 22, 1894 in Castalia, Iowa, to Henry and Elizabeth Senholz Meyer. He married Elsie Rowland on Sept 6, 1916 in West Union. She died Jan. 25, 1964.

Mr. Meyer spent his working life as a teacher and later as Fayette County superintendent of schools. He served with the Red Cross during World War II and later owned a gift shop in Maquoketa. He later ran a small picture framing business out of his home.

He was the author of “Odds and Ends”, a column in the Maquoketa Sentinel-Press and recently published a book recounting his thoughts on a variety of subjects.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church Maquoketa.

A daughter, Mary, survives.

His parents, wife, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
