Margaret Roberts

Services were held for Margaret Roberts, 86, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Elgin with Rev. Rick Johnson and Rev. Lee Boleyn officiating. Roberts, a long time Elgin resident, died June 3, 2008 at the Keystone Nursing Care Center, Keystone. Interment is at the Wadena City Cemetery.

Margaret Mayne Roberts was born Feb. 22, 1922 in Dough, County Antrim, Northern Ireland to Samuel & Elizabeth Mayne, the oldest of six children.

Margaret married E. Leonard Roberts, an American G.I. on November 11, 1943 at Killbride Presbyterian Church in North Ireland. Soon after their marriage, Leonard was sent back to the U.S. Margaret followed a year later, where she soon and very proudly became a U.S. citizen.

Margaret and Leonard owned and operated The Grill Cafe in downtown Elgin for many years where she was well known for her wonderful down home cooking, but especially her delicious pies & cookies.

She was especially proud of her three boys and the sports that they were part of. Even though she never had a driver's license, she never missed any of their games, whether it was a home or away.

Margaret is survived by her three sons, Sam (Karen) of Davenport, Leon (Barb) of Mulvane, Kan. and Dave (Karen) of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Davis, Orlando, Fla., Krista Bentson, Mankato, Minn., Brian Behrend, Mulvane, Kan., Stacy Roberts, Rochester, Minn., Terra Bracy, Cedar Rapids, Kelly Gerard, N. Ft. Myers, Fla., Dawn Lord, Augusta, Kan., Heather Roberts, Wichita, Kan., Brandy Wallace, Wichita, Kan., and Katie Roberts, Cedar Rapids; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers Samuel (Greta) Mayne & Thomas (Hazel) Mayne; sisters Betty Topping & Christine Anderson, all of North Ireland. She also leaves behind a host of nieces & nephews as well as many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard; their son Billy; three grandsons, Jeffrey Roberts, Dustin Roberts and Chad Roberts; her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Maisie & Jimmy Crone & brothers-in-law Alec Topping and Billy Anderson.
