Ethyl Mae Manning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Manning, was born January 3, 1890, on the home place Just south of Oelwein. She has known little
of any other community, being reared, schooled and trained in this place. Attended school in Southside school, spent a year in the high school
and completed a course in the Corn Belt Business College, afterward going to Chicago as a stenographer for a short time, then back to Oolwein, and at the time of her decease she was employed in Waterloo.
She had never been a strong girl— her strength in no wise heing equal to her ambition. Again and again she struggled and fought against the inroads
of ill health and, passed away last Friday, September 27, while in the Presbyterian hospital of Waterloo. Everything was done for her health
and comfort that possibly could have been done.
Two years ago she united with the Presbyterian church of this place in confession of faith of faith In Christ and a splendid, loyal earnest spirit actuated all her days. She leaves her
father and mother and sister, Pearl, and a large company of relatives and friends to mourn, and profit by her quiet, helpful character and memory.
The last services were held from the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. F. Y. Nichols. Music was provided by the choir and Miss Mildred Widdows who sang an appropriate solo. There was a very large attendance of relatives
and friends, the auditorium and Sunday school room being filled. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. The pastor did not
deliver a set discourse but talked about the life of the young woman who had departed. He spoke highly of her life and comforted the family
stricken by her death. Interment was in the Otsego cemetery.
