Pauline Imus was born of good
thrifty parentage in Essex county, New
York, on Dec. 23. 1828. At the age of
eight she migrated with her parents
who were attracted by the larger opportunities
of the west to Ohio, settling
in Shelby county, where she was united in
marriage with Harmon Damon in 1847. Seven
children were born to them, three sons and
four daughters. Two of the daughters have
preceded the mother in death.
The remaining children are Myron H. W., Mrs.
Mary E. Bennett, Will and Mrs. Carrie Hulbert,
all of these excepting the youngest, Mrs.
Hulburt, were born in Ohio. There are also 23
grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Damon left Ohio in Oct, 1867, c
coming to Iowa and settling in Fayette county
four miles east of Oelwein. Mr. Damon passed
away November 17, 1879 and Mrs. Damon
continued to live on the farm and care for her
family, the youngest being only 11 years of age.
She was a good pains taking mother and a
hard worker. She had high ideals of character
and she taught her children to be honest and
industrious. She was a believer in the heavenly
Father and his goodness and took comfort from
his promises.
She was blessed with health and strength for the
most part until she suffered a stroke of paralysis
last February. She recovered in some measure
from this for a time but for the last three months
of her life she was confined to her bed. She
suffered a second stroke on Friday morning,
October 23, which rendered her unconscious.
She fell peacefully asleep about seven in the
evening of the same day at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Carrie Hulbert, 9 miles southwest
of Oelwein, aged 85 years, 10 months.
