Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. June 11, 2004 at the Elgin Lutheran Church in Elgin, Iowa, with interment at the Elgin Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home, of Elgin, was in charge of arrangements.

DeVere Johnes Halverson, 85, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI, following a sudden illness.

He was born July 5, 1918, in Fayette County, Iowa to Anna Bertina (Anderson) and Albert Oscar Halverson. He attended schools in Fayette and Clayton Counties.

He was united in marriage to Norma Pearl Loftsgard on November 16, 1945 at the Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Larry, Robert and Nancy.

DeVere farmed his entire life in Fayette County. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family, farming and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He is survived by his wife Norma; his children, Robert (Jane) Halverson, West Union, Nancy (Dan) Merfeld, Elburn, IL, daughter-in-law Peggy Halverson, West Union; nine grandchildren, Ann Halverson Britt, West Union, Jodi Halverson Bronson, Grundy Center, Jon Halverson, Des Moines, Kari Halverson Hackley, West Union, Kyle Halverson, at home, Shelby Halverson, at home, Michael Merfeld at home, Matthew Merfeld, at home, Mark Merfeld at home; four great grandchildren, Madison Bronson, Malia Bronson, Zander Britt, Kaitlyn Hackley; two brothers, Harold (Gladys) Halverson, Elgin, Louis (Darlene) Halverson, Stoughton, WI and two sisters, Irene Ruroden, Monona and Lillian Hansel, West Union.

DeVere was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Larry DeVere Halverson and a sister, Frances Bemiss.
