Daniel S. Hillman 1863-1954

HILLMAN, BEARE, BROWNELL, PRESTON

Daniel S. Hillman was born in
Janesborough, Grant county, Indiana
March 18, 1863, and died
July 14, 1954 at Wilmington,
Calif;, at the age of 91 years, three
months and 26 days.
He was one of 12 children, four
boys and eight girls. At the age of
18 months he came with his family
to Iowa in a covered wagon.
Here they bought Iowa land for
$2.50 and began farming, which
remained his life's work.
He married Cordelia Beare and
they had three children, two of
whom preceded him in death
Surviving him is his son, Laverne,
of Waterloo. In 1920 his wife, Cordelia,
died and he moved to Wilmington,
Calif. Later he married
Vina Brownell who died in 1949.
He was an active church worker.
While in Oelwein he was a
member of Grace Methodist
church and in California he attended
the Christian church where
he was an active elder for 18 years
after which he was elected to the
honorary eldership for life.
In the .fall of 1953 he visited
Iowa and on his return fell and
broke an arm. He became bedfast
and remained thus until his death.
His last, years were spent with
Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Preston, 1109
Marine Avenue, Wilmington, Cal.
Mrs. Preston is a stepdaughter.
Funeral services were held in
the Hintz funeral home on July
20, 1954, at 2 p. m. in charge of
the,Rev. L. W. Hauter, pastor of
the Oelwein Presbyterian church.
Mrs: C. B.. Hintz and Ethel Obcrfell,
accompanied by Mrs. L. E
Hilsabeck sang. Burial was at
Otsego cemetery, southeast of Oelwein.
The following served as casket
bearers: Alfred Stewart, A. W.
Stewart, John Alsip, Ben Hough.
Harold Alsip and Donald Day.
