John Fraas 1841-1922

John Fraas, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jacob Fraas of Munchberg, Bavaria
Germany, was born Feb. 25, 1841. His
youth and his young manhood were
spent in the land of his forefathers,
where he also learned his trade as
weaver and where he was united in
marriage in 1864 with Miss Margarette-
Frahs. This union was blessed
by nine children, five of whom—four
in Germany and one in America—have
preceded their father to the land of
eternity. The surviving children
who mourn his loss are Mrs. Katherine
Shippy of Colome, South Dakota, Mrs.
Emma Russell of Waterloo, Mrs. Anna
Leigh and Mrs. Sophia Kenniston of
Oelwein.
In the spring of 1887 Mr. and Mrs.
Fraas and family migrated to America
where they made their home on the
south boundary of Fayette county
Some 17 years ago the beloved wife
and mother was taken ill. Friends
hoped for her recovery, but a gracious
God called her to his heavenly home.
In 1908 Mr. Fraas was married to
Mrs. Ann McLaury who now survives and
mourns his loss. The sincere sympathy
of the whole community goes out to the
bereaved in their sorrow.
Some weeks ago Mr. Fraas was taken
seriously ill. Old age. enhanced his
infirmity. Two weeks ago he seemed
to feel that his Creator had set the
time of his departure and his for the
rites of his church. On May llth, his
soul, winged its way to nobler realms.
Besides his sorrowing wife and
children, 14 grand children and 6
great grand children mourn his departure.
Last services were conducted Sunday
afternoon from the. home of his
daughter, Mrs. Anna Leigh, by the
Rev. S. Braulick. Mrs. Harry Phillips
sang the appropriate solo, "Meet
Me There." Interment was made in
Otsego Cemetery.
