James H. Gilson (1849-1925)

James H. Gilson aged 75, for nearly half century a respected resident of the county, passed away in the home of his son, Henry J. Gilson, west of the city, Tuesday morning, February 24, 1925. He had been in ailing health for the last two years, due to a general breakdown resulting from old age, and had been bedfast for seven weeks prior to his death. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Henry J. Gilson home. Burial will be in the Otsego cemetery, northeast of Hazleton.

Mr. Gilson was a native of Ohio, where he was born June 16, 1849. He spent his younger days in his native state and in Pennsylvania and Indiana. He came to Buchanan county from Indiana forty-eight years ago and located near Aurora on a farm. The following years of his life were spent in Buchanan county with the exception of three years, during which he resided in Fayette county. During the last nine years he and his wife made their home with their children.

In 1868 he was married to Miss Emmaline Hoppes. To them were born three children, three of whom are deceased. Besides the widow the surviving children are Benjamin F. of near Hazleton; Mrs. W. U. Patrick of Bryantsburg; Henry J. west of this city and J. R. of Fairbank. Mr. Gilson is also survived by three half brothers, David of Waterloo; Richard of Webster, Wisconsin, and Bert of Oelwein.

Mr. Gilson was a good citizen, a man held in high regard by many friends and in his death the family have the sympathy of the many friends.
