Samuel James Manning, son of Daniel and Sarah Manning, was born January 23, 1850, in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. He was the oldest of a family of six children, three of these preceding him in death. At the age of 19 years he came with his parents to Buchanan county. March 28, 1877 he was married to Sarah McLachlan who preceded him in death April 24, 1912. Their first home was about 1 mile south of where Stanley is now located, later moving to the farm in Fayette county. Retiring, they moved to Stanley, March, 1899. Mr. and Mrs. Manning were the parents of three children -- Mrs. Sarah Campbell, Effie and John James, two of whom have gone to their Heavenly home, John dying August 18, 1897 and Mrs. Campbell August 30, 1917. In early life Mr. Manning confessed his faith in Christ, uniting with the Presbyterian church of Oelwein. Later at the time of the organization of the Union church of Stanley, he was the first charter member. During all the thirty-seven years of active service in the Union church, he held the offices of trustee and deacon and for many years he was a faithful teacher of the Men's Bible class in the Sunday school. Besides his daughter surviving him are his brother, A. J. Manning of Des Moines; his sister, Mrs. Ada Brownell of Oelwein, and grandchildren, John A., Mabel, Marion and Sarah Campbell, Also two great grandchildren, Pauline and Vivian Campbell. These with many other relatives and a host of friends mourn his passing June 4, 1924, at his home in Stanley. The funeral services were held from the Union church Friday afternoon, June 6, Rev. Healy, assisted by Rev. Peck of Frankville, his former pastor, Officiating. The pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased, Art, Cyrus and George Sherrill, Herman Hall, Ernest Eschen and Glyde Day. Interment was made in Otsego cemetery.
