Charles C. Brownell (1887-1951)

STANLEY (Special) — Charles
Chester Brownell, 63, was born on
the home place, in Fayette County,
near Stanley, May 28, 1887,
and died at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein,
March 30, 1951, after 3 months of illness.
He was the first child of George
W. and Melissa Powers Brownell;
a brother, Burr Brownell, Waterloo;
and a sister, Mrs. Sara Hallinan,
Pasadena, Calif, survive him.
He was graduate from the Oelwein
high school, of the class of
1905. For two years he attended
the Iowa State College, at Ames,
On Nov. 25, 1908, he married
Julia Abbott, who survives him.
They had three children; two sons
and a daughter; George, on the
home place; Grant, of El Paso,
Texas and Mrs. Ruth Gunnison, of
Stanley.
Five grandchildren, many nieces,
nephews, cousins also survive.
Mr. Brownell farmed on the
home place all of his life. He
was active in community affairs,
being assessor of Scott township,
for 12 years a director of the Oelwein
Creamery for 12 years;
chairman of Scott township Triple
A. for a number of years; and a
director of the Farmers' Mutual
Fire Insurance Association of
Fayette county, until the time of
his death. He was a member of
the Stanley Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held in
in the Grace Methodist Church,
Oelwein, Tuesday, April 3, 1951.
Rev. Charles E. Mason, pastor of
Grace Methodist, church, and
Rev. F. E. Mastin, pastor of the
Hazleton and Stanley Methodist
Church, officiated.
Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.
