Rose Clara Oelwein 1878 - 1944

Rose Clara Oelwein was born
at Oelwein, Iowa, the city which
bears her family name, on March
4, 1878. She was the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Oelwein and
the youngest in a family of three
sons and five daughters.
She was' baptized in infancy at
the home of her parents, by Pastor
Spiegel. She atlended confirmation
school at St. Paul Lutheran
church, Waverly, Iowa, and was
confirmed there in her youth by
the Rev. Frederick Zimmermann.
She attended and graduated
from the public schools and the
High School of Oelwein. After
her graduation from high school
she taught public school for two
years. - She then allended college
at Des Moines, Iowa, where,
among other subjects, she took
piano lessons. She was especially
interested in music and followed
this art throughout her life.
She made her home with her
parents until their respective
deaths and then lived with three
of her sisters at 19 1st St. SW.

In 1934 she moved to the farm at
the end of East Charles Street,
Mrs Mary Krause, Mrs. Lena
Barr and Anna. In March 1944
the farm was sold and she and
Mrs. Krause bought a home at
419 East Charles, where they lived
since that time.
About three years ago Miss Oelwein
suffered a slight stroke,
which impaired her eyesight. On
Monday, Dec. 11 of this year, she
suffered a severe paralytic stroke
while being about to help her sister
prepare the evening meal. She
was taken lo Mercy Hospital of
this city on December 14. The
next day she lapsed into a coma
and at about 12:20 a. m. on Saturday,
December 16, it pleased her
Heavenly Father lo relieve her of
her earthly suffering and take her
to her eternal home. She attained
The age of 66 years, 9 months, and
12 days.
She was preceded in death by
her father, who died in 1912; her
mother, in 1926; her brother Charles,
in 1928; her sisters, Emma, in
1934; Anna, in 1935; and Mrs. Lena
Barr, in 1937; and one brother,
who died in infancy.
She is survived by her sister,
Mrs. Mary Krause; two nephews,
Carl Krause of Oakland, California,
and Milton J. Barr of Oelwein;
three nieces, Mrs. Christian
Schreitmueller of Kiester, Minn.;
Mrs. Rose Marie Wunschel of Chicago,
111. and Mrs. Lillian Seedorf,
of Dundee, Iowa. She also
leaves many friends in this congregation
and in the community.
Miss Oelwein' was a faithful
member of Zion American Lutheran
Church throughout her life.
In her youth she was an active
member of the Luther League and
later she taught Sunday School
for twelve years. She loved her
church and was faithful in attending
its services. She gave generously
of her time, her talents, and
her means to her church. She was
also a member of long standing
in the Oelwein Woman's club.
In the hour of death she placed
her trust completely in Christ,
Whom she had served throughout
her life.
The funeral was held from the
Hintz Funeral Home and from
Zion American Lutheran church
on Tuesday afternoon, December
19, with Rev. H. C. Schiffler officiating.
Mrs. Karl Behrens and
Mrs. Alvin Kiel sang "Abide With
Me" and "Asleep in Jesus," accompanied
by Mrs. E. F. Schuchmann
at the organ. Interment
was made in Oakdale cemetery
