Bessie Loftsgard

Bessie Loftsgard, of West Union, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union. She was 99.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at the East Clermont Lutheran Church, rural Clermont, with the Reverend Donald Berg officiating. The pianist was Diane Klemp and the soloist was Pastor Berg. Interment was in the East Clermont Church Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Constance (Lien) Loftsgard was born October 13, 1908, on a farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, to Evan and Mary (Ostlie) Lien. Bessie was the youngest of six children. She was baptized and confirmed in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. Bessie attended the Grand Meadow Township School and graduated from the Clermont High School.

On June 18, 1936, Bessie was married to Nelvin Arthur Loftsgard in the East Clermont Lutheran Parsonage by the Reverend Gunsten. They farmed in Grand Meadow Township for many years and then near Frankville until 1956, when they moved to West Union. Bessie worked at a local café for ten years. In their retirement years, both Bessie and Nelvin crocheted and wove rugs.

She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on November 13, 1998. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards and dominos.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nelvin; three brothers, Clifford, Earnest, and Oscar; two sisters, Myrtle Thorson and Clarissa Watterud; and a niece, Minerva Bacon.

She is survived by a niece, Velma Moorhead, Phoenix, Ariz., and two nephews, Eugene (Anna) Thorson, Clermont, and Charles (Bona) Thorson, Castalia.
