Iowa's oldest Legionnaire and one of Oelwein's most prominent citizens, Col. E. E. Stoup, 91, died at Mercy Hospital at 3:30 am today (Saturday). He had been a patient there the past five days.

The colonel, who was a retired Chicago Great Western railway superintendent, was past commander of the local Legion post and had been chaplain for many years.

He was a veteran of the 13th Engineers; member of Rotary club; past member of the Oelwein Chamber of Commerce; director of the First National Bank; member of the Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Commander Iowa Consistory, and a moderator of the Oelwein Baptist church for many years.

Elmer Ellsworth Stoup was born October 10, 1862, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob and Emily Louise Stoup. He had been a resident of Oelwein for 32 years. His address was 17 Fifth Avenue, S. E.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Ward Stoup, August 3, 1945. Two daughters also preceded him in death; Rea Rutledge and Hermione Hess.

Survivors include four grandchildren; Mrs. Louis E. Barnes, Sumner; Mrs. Rea Hamilton, Des Moines; Hays Rutledge, Oregon City, Oregon and Elmer Doyle, Redondo Beach, California. Also seven great grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 2 pm at First Baptist Church, the Rev. Ralph Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
