Alonzo Joseph Manning was born in Canada on the first of April 1863. When he was but four years of age his parents moved to the states and the most of Brother Manning's life has been spent in Iowa. He was married in Buchanan county in 1890 to Miss Nellie Jane Brownell. To this union four children were born, all whom are living. The wife and mother passed away in 1916 and about six years ago Brother Manning again married. For some time his health has not been good. He suffered a paralytic stroke October 30 from which he did not recover. Death released him November 10, 1926. All of his life Brother Manning has been a Christian. As a boy he united with the Methodist Episcopal church. Des Moines membership was at first at Asbury church and somewhat over a year ago was transferred to Capital Park ME church. The surviving children are William Daniel Manning, Mrs. Gladys Fiola, Frank Manning and Mrs. Bessie Clayton all residents of Des Moines. The body was brought here Saturday to the home of his niece, Miss Effie Manning. On Sunday services were held in the Union Church for the double funeral of Mr. Manning and his brother-in-law James Sherril of Waterloo who was with Mr. Manning when he passed away and on returning home he also suffered a paralytic stoke passing away Friday. Rev. Horace Foote of Hazleton, a life time friend and minister of both families, assisted by Rev. G. L. Heizerman, pastor of the Methodist church here, also of Hazleton, conducted the services. Pall bearers were six of Mr. Manning's nephews; Charles Brownell, Harold Brownell, Burr Brownell, Clyde Day, Herman Hall and Earnest Eschen. He was laid to rest in the Stanley Cemetery.
