The death of George Detrick occurred at the family residence on First Avenue East, Monday night after a short illness. He had been in his usual health and was seen on the streets Tuesday of last week. Taken ill Wednesday, it was not thought he was seriously ill and his death from heart trouble was a shock to his family and the community.

George Detrick was on of a family of nine children and was born in Pennsylvania September 8, 1833. He acquired a limited education in the district schools and remained at the parental home till he attained his majority when he began life for himself. He came west in 1856 and located in Delaware county, Iowa, where he spent one year and then removed to Spirit Lake the spring following the Indian massacre at that place. Entering a claim he made that place his home for three years. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company G. First Iowa Cavalry and saw service in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi. His regiment took part in engagements at Silver Creek, Black River and Prairie Grove. He was always at his post of duty, faithfully served his country and after four years and four months was honorably discharged.

At the close of the ware he went to Manchester, Delaware county, where he remained two years. In 1866 he came to Scott township, Fayette county and purchased a farm of 320 acres. He remained upon the farm till 1893 when he moved to Oelwein where he has since resided.

In Manchester, February 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Luckingbill who was born in Pennsylvania but brought up in Iowa. To this union were born six children, Mrs. Amanda B. Platt, Mrs. J. O. Crawford, J. W. Detrick, Mrs. J. H. Campbell, Mrs. R. W. Moulton and one child who died several years ago.

Mr. Detrick had been a consistent member of the United Brethren church for a number of years and died in the consolation of the Christian faith. The funeral will occur tomorrow, Thursday, at 1 pm from the Baptist church, Rev. A. R. Toothacre officiating. The G. A. R. post of which he was a member will attend in a body.
