The death of M. E. Lawrence, an old pioneer of this section, occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. D. Steggall, near the city. The funeral will occur from the Presbyterian Church Thursday at 11 a.m., Rev. J. B. McMinn of Fairbank, assisted by Rev. A. E. Moody, conducting the services. Interment in the Oelwein Cemetery.

M. E. Lawrence was born in Saratoga, New York, November 6, 1830. He came west to Wisconsin in 1859 and settled in this vicinity in 1869. He served the Union Army during the Civil War, first enlisting in the Third Wisconsin, and afterwards re-enlisting in the Twenty-third Michigan Infantry. He was a member of the G. A. R.

In 1854 he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Stark, and her death occurred in 1896. To this union were born the following children --- Edward Lawrence, a resident of Wisconsin, Frank Lawrence, James Lawrence and Mrs. Ed Steggall, residents of this city and vicinity, all whom survive him.

Mr. Lawrence had been in good health up to the past year when he became afflicted with Bright's disease of which he died. He led an active life, and was confined to the house but a short time before his death. He had a wide acquaintance in this city and vicinity and many friends of the family extend condolence.
