John H. Obenchain was born May 11, 1848 at Hardin, Ohio, and departed this life at 12:30 am Tuesday, October 28 at this home 205 Fifth Avenue South, Oelwein, Iowa.

He came with his parents to Fayette county, settling on a farm in Fremont township in 1855. Here he remained until his marriage in 1877 to Miss Rose E. Carroll at Fairbank on June 28, 1877. They then moved to a farm of their own in the same township where they resided until moving to Oelwein on March 22, 1903. To this union three children were born, William A., Carroll A. and Mary M., who with his widow remain to mourn his death.

As a pioneer he was a sturdy worker; a kind father and husband and won many friends in the county. The funeral was held Thursday morning from Sacred Heart church and the interment in Westgate cemetery.
