Kate E. Brownell (1860-1898)

The Book of Life is Closed

Kate E. Brownell died at her home near Stanley, February 26, 1898, after an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held the following Monday in the church at Stanley and the remains interred in the Otsego Cemetery. Rev. J. P. Leonard of Hazleton conducted the service. The floral decorations, considering the time of the year, were very beautiful.

Deceased was the daughter of S. D. and Alice Sayles. She was born in Richmond, McHenry County, Illinois, November 23, 1860. In the fall of 1864 she came with her parents to Iowa where they took up their residence on a farm near Oelwein and where she lived until her marriage with Frank B. Brownell, November 13, 1884. Three children were given to them, Bessie, Harold and Claude, two of whom died in their infancy. Harold, aged nine years, her husband, aged father, two brothers and two sisters besides a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn her departure. Quiet and unassuming in her nature she cared little for society outside her own circle of friends and was usually to be found in her home, brightening and cheering it with her presence; and making it the brightest spot on earth both for herself and her household. Her married life has always been a happy one and her surroundings pleasant. During her sickness she was ever uncomplaining and cheerful and she died trusting in Jesus.
